Asiwaju of Lagos, Jagaban of Borgu – The Many Titles of Bola Ahmed Tinubu: How He Earned Them
When you hear the name Bola Ahmed Tinubu, you’re not just hearing the name of Nigeria’s current President — you’re hearing a man woven in tradition, power, and political history.
Let’s talk about his many titles and how they came to be:
Asiwaju of Lagos –
This prestigious chieftaincy title means “Leader” in Yoruba. It was conferred on Tinubu by the traditional council of Lagos in recognition of his leadership role in the political and economic transformation of Lagos State. Asiwaju is more than a title — it’s a badge of political dominance in the southwest.
Jagaban of Borgu –
Perhaps the most popular title, it was given to Tinubu by the Emir of Borgu in Niger State. Jagaban means “Leader of the Warriors”. He earned this northern title because of his ability to build alliances across Nigeria — uniting the southwest and the north, especially during the 2015 elections that ended PDP’s 16-year reign.
City Boy –
Though not a traditional title, this one became a popular political nickname for Tinubu, emphasizing his urban influence and modern political strategy, particularly in Lagos.
National Leader of APC (before becoming President) –
Within the party structure, Tinubu was recognized as the National Leader due to his role in merging opposition parties into what became the APC. His political strategy, fundraising strength, and influence among governors gave him that unofficial, yet powerful, title.
Why So Many Titles?
Tinubu earned these honors not just through wealth, but by building political bridges, raising new leaders, and demonstrating what many call “the master game of influence.”
From Lagos to Borgu and beyond, Tinubu’s titles reflect the regions, relationships, and realities of Nigerian politics.
