THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ESAN AND IGBO

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ESAN AND IGBO

I write this to educate some misguided Esans.

Esan doesn’t share blood relationship with the IGBOS across the Niger. We also do not share linguistics and there is no IGBO who founded anywhere in Esan territory.

However, there are cultures in ancient times that was widely practiced in Southern part of Nigeria. For example, Ikekobor in Esan. The Ika people called it Ikenga.

In the remote past, some Igbos once lived in Igodomigodo now called Benin City. Note, Esanland is not Igodomigodo. The whole of Benin was not even Igodomigodo. Udo in Benin for instance was a separate rivalry kingdom from Igodomigodo.

In the olding days , our fathers called IGBOS across the Niger (Igbo-ne-loria). This is the word our ancestors used to refer to them.

Igbo people started coming into Esanland in modern history. During the reign of Uwagbale 11, in Uromi Kingdom. Just before Nigeria got her independence from the British. A group of IGBOS, majority from Anambra State were looking for a settlement in Esanland to do business.

They first reached Ubiaja Kingdom and asked Onojie of Ubiaja for help. He declined to give them a settlement. They moved to Uromi Kingdom and approached Ojuromi, Uwagbale 11.

Ojuromi decided to give them a settlement in a place called (AGIGBO) old Agbor Road, Uromi. Close to the city centre where their activities can easily be monitored.

Some of the IGBOS from that migration or offspring’s are what is known as Uba pharmaceuticals, Saint Paul, Mike, Obi, Antco and Blessed IKD today. They have paid tax and contributed to the development of Esanland. Most even speak Esan more than Esans.
