Biography of Adebayo Ismail Adewusi, Early Life, Career and Education

Adebayo Ismail Adewusi (born May 20, 1958) is a Nigerian academic, lawyer, public administrator, and politician. He has served as a Commissioner in Lagos State, a governorship aspirant in Oyo State, and as the Postmaster General and CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).

Early Life and Education
Adewusi hails from Eruwa in Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State. He was born on May 20, 1958, to Pa Kareem Babatunde Adewusi, a peasant farmer and traditional drummer, and Madam Faderera Asabi Adewusi, in Anko Eruwa.

He attended Baptist Secondary Modern School in Eruwa and later earned his West African School Certificate at the Technical College, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Adewusi studied Computer Science at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, before graduating with First Class Honours in Economics from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). He completed his M.Sc. at the same university.

In 1993, he earned a Ph.D. in International Monetary Economics from Keio University, Tokyo, as a Monbusho Scholar. Additionally, he obtained an LLB degree from the University of Lagos in 2000.

Career
Adewusi began his career as an Assistant Lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University before pursuing his Ph.D. in Japan. Upon completing his doctorate, he joined Lead Merchant Bank Limited (1994–2000).

From 2000 to 2004, he served as the Managing Director/CEO of Ibile Holdings Ltd., an investment company owned by the Lagos State Government. He later became Lagos State’s Commissioner for Finance and Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning (2004–2006).

Adewusi also chaired Wemabod, a company established by the Western Regional Government under Chief Obafemi Awolowo to provide housing in Lagos.

In December 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him as the Postmaster General and CEO of NIPOST, where he succeeded Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi. He held this position until October 2023, when President Bola Tinubu replaced him with Tola Odeyemi.

Projects
Nigerian Postcode Ecosystem and Infrastructure
As Postmaster General, Adewusi spearheaded the Nigerian Postcode Ecosystem and Infrastructure project. This initiative, in collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), aimed to enhance postal service delivery in Nigeria. The project combined NIPOST’s newly created standard postcode system with satellite imagery and national mapping from NASRDA. Adewusi led NIPOST in signing the Memorandum of Understanding for this landmark project.

Political Involvement
Adewusi has been an active member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State since May 2018. He has also contested for governorship in Oyo State.

Adebayo Adewusi’s career spans academia, public administration, banking, and law, with significant contributions to Lagos State and Nigeria’s postal infrastructure.
