GENERAL IRISH POTATO FIELD MANAGEMENT
GENERAL IRISH POTATO FIELD MANAGEMENT,
To achieve a high yield in Irish potatoes , it is important to plant certified seeds and select well-draining soil that retains moisture and is loose for easy expansion of tubers.
It is also crucial to ensure the Irish potato crop receives adequate fertilizer at all stages, including both basal and top dressing, as well as foliar fertilizers. Critical stages begin at germination when tuber initiation occurs. This is why a basal with a high phosphorus content is needed so that crops can grow vigorously, develop a good root system, and prepare well for tuber development. Avoid fertilizers with high-nitrogen content as they can lead to rapid rotting of potatoes after harvest and only encourage excessive leaf growth.
Providing the crop with sufficient water is essential to maintain cool, moist conditions.
Additionally, applying fungicides and insecticides is vital to prevent diseases and pest infestations. During the rainy season, fungicide spraying should be done at 3-7 day intervals. When a disease or insect attack is noticed, ensure to spray immediately , while in the off-season, intervals should be 7-14 days.
Regular scouting is important to identify any crop abnormalities, diseases, or pest attacks for prompt spraying action. Crop rotation with plants like beans, soybeans, peas, carrots ,cabbage, maize, or sunflower is advisable to prevent disease and maintain soil health. Effective weed control, whether manual or chemical, is necessary to prevent competition for nutrients.
