Main Causes of Sudden death in broiler chickens

Sudden death in broiler chickens can be a significant concern for poultry farmers.

It’s often multifactorial, meaning several elements can contribute to it.

Here are the main causes:

SUDDEN DEATH SYNDROME (SDS) / “Flip-Over” Disease:

This is one of the most common causes of sudden, unexplained death in fast-growing broilers.

CAUSES

While the exact cause is uncertain, it’s widely believed to be a metabolic disorder linked to cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats).

Modern broilers are genetically selected for rapid growth and high feed conversion efficiency, which can predispose them to heart problems.

TRIGGERS

Stress is a major trigger for cardiac arrhythmias in broilers, leading to ventricular fibrillation and

CHARACTERISTIC

Affected birds are typically well-grown, appear healthy just before death, and are often found dead on their backs (though they can also be found on their sides or breasts.

PREVENTION

Reduce Stress, Loud Noises and Sudden Disturbances. These can startle birds, causing them to pile up, leading to suffocation or injuries.

Slowing Growth Rate: This is a primary strategy for reducing SDS, especially during the first few weeks of life, often achieved through feed restriction or altering nutrient density.
