Mutiu Adepoju (born 22 December 1970) is a former professional footballer from Nigeria who played primarily as a midfielder. Renowned for his skill and versatility, Adepoju enjoyed a prolific career in Spain, achieving significant milestones at both club and international levels.
Club Career
Early Beginnings and Real Madrid
Born in Ibadan, Adepoju started his professional journey in 1989 when he left Nigeria to join the youth setup of Real Madrid. However, he did not break into the first team, playing instead for the reserves.
Racing de Santander and La Liga Success
In the 1992–93 season, Adepoju showcased his scoring prowess by netting 11 goals in Segunda División, helping Racing de Santander secure promotion to La Liga. He became a key player for Racing, featuring prominently in Spain’s top-flight league over the next three seasons.
Real Sociedad and Later Years
Adepoju joined Real Sociedad in 1996–97 and had a strong debut season. However, he struggled for consistency in subsequent years. In 2001–02, he briefly moved to Al-Ittihad Club in Saudi Arabia before returning to Spain to play for UD Salamanca in the second division.
His career wound down with stints in Turkey and Cyprus, and he retired in 2006, concluding his playing days in Spain’s lower leagues.
International Career
Youth Team Achievements
Adepoju was a standout performer for the Nigeria U20 team during the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship, famously scoring two goals against the United States in the semi-finals. This performance propelled Nigeria to the final, where they finished runners-up to Portugal.
Senior National Team Success
Adepoju earned 48 caps for Nigeria, scoring six goals. He made his senior debut in 1990 against Togo and gained prominence during the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations. He was instrumental in Nigeria’s victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.
He represented Nigeria in three FIFA World Cups:
1994: Played a pivotal role.
1998: Scored in a thrilling 3–2 win over Spain.
2002: Included in the squad but did not feature in matches.
Post-Retirement and Legacy
After retiring, Adepoju returned to his roots, taking up the role of general manager at Shooting Stars FC, the club where his professional career began.
