Tex Sherman Life in Nigeria, Tex Sherman Journey in Education and Culture (1962–1966)
My name is Tex Sherman.
Photo: Ife (pronounced E Fay) is the ancestral seat of the Yoruba people. Extensive archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous relics of their heritage. The traditional leader of Ife is known as the Ooni of Ife.
We resided in Ibadan, in Western Nigeria, from August 1962 to August 1966.
I was appointed to the Ministry of Education as the coordinator for In-Service Teacher Training across Western Nigeria, a region approximately the size of the state of Ohio.
I was the sole American in the Central Office of the Inspectorate Department.
One of my responsibilities was to act as a liaison between U.S. initiatives and the Nigerian government. Barbara took on several roles, including working with the American Consulate, the U.S. Peace Corps, and Chief Rotimi Williams QC.
Chief Williams was a key architect of the Nigerian constitution.
