Biography of Olusegun Rahman Mimiko

 

Olusegun Rahman Mimiko (Yoruba: Olúṣẹ́gun Mímikò; born 3 October 1954) is a Nigerian medical doctor, public administrator, and influential politician renowned for his transformative leadership in Ondo State. A two-term governor, federal minister, and long-serving technocrat, Mimiko holds the historic distinction of being the first Labour Party governor in Nigeria and the first person to serve two consecutive terms as governor of Ondo State.

Mimiko’s early life was marked by strong academic and leadership inclinations. He enrolled at Obafemi Awolowo University (then University of Ife), where he became an active participant in student politics. His leadership roles on campus included:

Member, Student Representative Council (1975–1976)

Chairman, Special Honours Committee of the SRC (1976–1977)

Member, Students’ Union Electoral Commission (1976–1977)

Public Relations Officer, International Students Association (1977–1978)

He earned his B.Sc. in Health Sciences in 1976, followed by the professional degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1980.

Mimiko is registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) as a qualified medical practitioner.

Medical Career

Upon completing his medical training, Mimiko returned to Ondo State to begin his professional career. He served as a House Officer under the Ondo State Health Management Board at the General (now State Specialist) Hospital, Ado Ekiti, from 1980 to 1981.

He later joined the Nigerian Navy as a medical officer at the Nigerian Navy College (NNS Onura) in Onne, Port Harcourt, serving between 1981 and 1982. At the end of this period, he returned to the Ado Ekiti hospital as a medical officer.

During the early 1980s, he practiced medicine in Lagos, working at:

Apagun Clinic, Yaba

Alleluyah Hospital, Oshodi, where he became Acting Medical Director (1983–1984)

In 1985, he founded his own private medical establishment, MONA MEDI-CLINICS, in Ondo City, which quickly became a respected healthcare facility in the region.

Entry into Public Service

Mimiko’s administrative competence and commitment to public health drew him into government service. He was appointed Ondo State Commissioner for Health on two different occasions, where he championed reforms aimed at improving primary healthcare delivery, maternal health, and rural medical outreach.

He later became the Secretary to the Ondo State Government (SSG), a position that expanded his role in state administration and policy development.

His growing national profile led to his appointment as the Federal Minister of Housing and Urban Development, where he advanced housing reforms and pushed for improved national urban planning frameworks.

Governor of Ondo State (2009–2017)

In 2009, Olusegun Mimiko became the 16th (and 5th civilian) Governor of Ondo State after a landmark court judgment restored his electoral mandate. His tenure is widely recognized for innovative social programs and infrastructural development. He introduced several key policies, including:

The Abiye Safe Motherhood Programme, which drastically reduced maternal and infant mortality

The Mother and Child Hospitals, providing free medical services to pregnant women and children under five

Massive investments in mega primary schools, urban renewal, and road infrastructure

Strengthening of local governance and community-based development initiatives

He won re-election in 2012, becoming the first governor in the state’s history to serve two consecutive terms.

Political Career After Governorship

In 2019, Mimiko contested for the Ondo Central Senatorial seat under the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), a party he helped to build. Though unsuccessful, his influence in Ondo and national politics remained strong.

Legacy and Influence

Olusegun Mimiko is often celebrated for his technocratic leadership style and people-oriented governance. His maternal and child health policies gained national and international recognition, earning Ondo State commendations from global health institutions.

His blend of medical expertise, administrative skill, and political experience continues to shape discourse on public health policy and progressive politics in Nigeria.
