Nigerian Emirs and Chiefs Meet Lord Lugard: A Historic Visit to London (1925)
The photograph captures a remarkable moment in colonial Nigerian history: the visit of leading Northern Nigerian traditional rulers to London in May 1925. Though often mistakenly dated to 1934, the image actually shows the Sultan of Sokoto and prominent Emirs touring the London Zoological Gardens during an official visit organised by the British colonial administration.
At the centre of the gathering stands Sir Frederick Lugard, the first Governor-General of Nigeria and the architect of the 1914 Amalgamation, which unified the Northern and Southern Protectorates. Lugard’s political philosophy—indirect rule—shaped the purpose of the visit. Under indirect rule, Britain governed through existing traditional structures, relying heavily on Emirs and Chiefs to administer local affairs. Bringing these rulers to London was therefore a strategic gesture, designed to display British power, introduce them to imperial institutions, and strengthen loyalty within the colonial system.
Among the delegation were some of the most influential figures of the era, including the Sultan of Sokoto, the Emir of Kano, and the Emir of Gwandu. Their presence symbolised not only the political importance of Northern Nigeria in the colonial arrangement but also the enduring relevance of indigenous authority, which Lugard’s policies preserved and reshaped.
For the British public, the visit provided a glimpse into the Empire’s vast reach. For Nigerian traditional rulers, it was an encounter with the imperial centre—a moment that blended diplomacy, symbolism, and colonial politics. The event remains one of the most iconic images illustrating the relationship between Britain and Northern Nigeria’s leadership during the early twentieth century.
