A Guide to Aba Slang and Its Meanings

I was born in my hometown, Uturu, but I left the village at a young age when I was in primary 2 to move to Onitsha, where I attended primary school and junior secondary school. At that time, I wasn’t aware of any slangs or they weren’t very popular.

Later on in life, I spent a significant amount of time in Aba, where I truly became familiar with Aba slangs. Even though it has been a while since I left Aba, I still remember some of the slangs we used. They may be considered old slangs, but let me share them here for everyone to determine if they are still in use or not.

“Nwa-Aba” = Someone raised in Aba

“I wu lingua-franca” = You are a naive person.

“Kpaputa ya ko oshie” = Make something happen.

“Nga-ekurugi” = I will cheat or dupe you.

“Igbaharia” = If you mess around.

“Gbazuo ahia” = Smoke weed or accomplish something.

“Arobam” = My close friend.

“Ole way”? = How’s everything with you?

“Nwa Yok” = Criminal and a regular smoker.

“Nkpofe” = Excessive enjoyment.

“Ishi gi owu chin chin”? = You are too slow.

“Ikpowimpi” = Lack of seriousness.

“Araagbakwalagi o”! = Don’t act stupid!

“Ino there”! = You are correct!

“Nna a kupukwanu” = Man, forget it.

“Ibie lam uche” = That’s a good idea.

“Kaanyina weigh kwa” = Let’s continue checking.

“Ozuo-ola”! = It has already happened!

“Dachiii!” = Very strong!/ Very good.

“Mefiojo” = Unattractive person (mostly used for ladies).

“Asa” = Beautiful girl.

“Asaanwuru” = Ugly thing.

These are all the slangs I can think of right now. Feel free to add more if you are familiar with them.
