Tamunoemi Sokari David-West was one of Nigeria’s most distinguished medical scientists and a rare example of a scholar who bridged academia, governance, and international scientific service over six decades.

Academic and Scientific Career
Dr. David-West was a virologist and professor at the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine, where he taught, mentored generations of medical professionals, and contributed to foundational research in viral diseases.
His expertise was recognised internationally. He served on the World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Panel on Viral Diseases and as Director of the WHO’s National Influenza Centre. He received numerous fellowships, including:

David-West’s career extended well beyond academia into significant roles in public administration:
Commissioner of Education, Rivers State and member of the State’s Executive Council (1975–1979)
Assisted in the drafting of Nigeria’s 1979 Constitution, contributing to the foundational legal framework for the Second Republic
Federal Minister of Petroleum and Energy (1984–1986) during the regime of Major General Muhammadu Buhari—a period critical to Nigeria’s management of its energy resources
He was also active in national planning, serving on General Sani Abacha’s Vision 2010 Committee (1996–1997).
Political Aspirations
In the return to civilian rule, David-West sought the Presidential nomination of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) prior to the 1999 elections—reflecting his commitment to national leadership even outside academia and civil service.
Recognition and Awards
Throughout his life, David-West received numerous awards and honours from international institutions and foreign governments, including Liberia, in recognition of his scientific contributions, leadership, and public service.
Dr. Tamunoemi Sokari David-West passed away in November 2019 at University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. His passing marked the end of a multi-faceted career that shaped medicine, education, governance, and national policy in modern Nigeria.
