Set in the heart of a historic landscape, Bodiam Castle is one of Britain’s most picturesque and romantic ancient monuments.

With spiral staircases, battlements and the remains of an iron-clad oak portcullis, thought to be possibly the oldest in England.

The castle is now just a ruin.

Bodiam Castle in East Sussex was built in 1385 to defend Southeast England from the invading French during the Hundred Years’ War.

Although licensed for military defense, some believe Bodiam Castle is nothing more than a fancy manor, built to boost the reputation of its owner, Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III.

Whatever its original purpose, Bodiam is considered one of the last great medieval castles in England.

Although Bodiam Castle was never involved in any war, it houses restless spirits – like most medieval castles.

Some people passing the ruins at dead of night, have reported hearing the distinctive sound of ghostly revelry, emanating from the hollow shell.

Others have told of hearing “strange oaths” and “foreign-sounding songs”.

There is the mysterious shadow of a ghostly lady in red.
She has been seen standing on the top of a tower, usually at night under a full moon.
Those who have seen her, say she seems to be waiting for someone or something.

She seems to gaze out over the moonlit countryside, her eyes fixed upon some distant point.
Who she is, and what she seeks, no one knows…..

Another mysterious spirit involves a little boy dressed in Victorian clothes.
His ghost was seen in 1994 by the castle custodian.

The boy was seen running towards the castle, but vanished midway across the bridge, suggesting he may have fallen into the moat and drowned.
