Canada ends flagpoling for foreign nationals – 3 things to know about new immigration policy

Canada has announced the termination of flagpoling for work and study permits at land border crossings, effective December 23, 2024.

This decision means temporary residents can no longer leave and re-enter the country to renew or activate their permits at border points.

Instead, all applications must now be processed online through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Flagpoling, a practice once favored by international students and workers for its speed and convenience, often led to delays and strained resources at border crossings.
