Coronation of Richard III & Anne Neville
Richard, Duke of Gloucester and his wife Anne Neville were crowned in Westminster Abbey on Sunday 6th July 1483.
The day before, Richard and Anne had rode in a magnificent procession from the Tower of London to Westminster.
On the day of the ceremony, they walked barefoot on a red carpet from White Hall to Westminster Hall, and then to the Abbey.
The queen’s train was held by Margaret Beaufort – whose son Henry Tudor would defeat Richard at the battle of Bosworth.
Richard was crowned by Thomas Bourchier the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Anne was crowned queen following Richard’s coronation.
Almost the entire peerage of England was present at what was a magnificent spectacle.
After the ceremony, there was a coronation banquet in Westminster.
