Delta lady who dumped baby inside well will be charged for infanticide – Police
Delta State Commissioner of Police Abaniwonda Olufemi has confirmed that the 24-year-old lady who dumped her one-and-half-year-old baby inside the well has been arrested over a case of infanticide.
The suspect, Sofia Nkwor, from Nsien, Ndokwa East LGA, committed the crime on April 28, 2024, along the road in Araya community, Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioner of police, who confirmed the development, said the crime was reported at Oleh Police Division, Isoko South LGA. He also confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that investigation is ongoing.
He said children who went to play around the tree discovered the abandoned child floating in the well, prompting them to raise an alarm.
When Sofia was interviewed, she stated that she dumped the boy, Destiny, in the well on April 26, 2024.
“The father abandoned me after denying the baby and my grandma, whom I am staying with, equally abandoned me.
“As a farmer, the baby was distracting me from my farming job. I was actually in a bad mood when I did it. I loved the baby but was helpless then. No helper. I was alone taking care of her. It was after the vigilante arrested me and handed me over to the police that l realised what l did,” Sofia stated.
