HISTORY OF GANYE PEOPLE

Ganye Local Goverenment Area OF Adamawa state consists of seven Administrative Districts.

Toward the end of 19th century the area come under German colonial rule as a result of the scramble for colonies in Africa by Europeans.

During this period, the area had such chiefdoms as Dayella, Sugu, Gurum, Yebbi, Danaba, Kiri, Mapeo, etc which were administratively independent of each other but acorded recognition and respect to Gang-Dayella, the chief priest of Dayella (Yelli) as their spiritual leader.

When the Germans were defeated at the end of the first world war in 1918, their territory were partitioned between Britain and France. As a result, the area come under British administration where it was merged (along with Mubi, Gwazo and Gashaka/ mambilla) to the British colony of Nigeria (Adamawa Province) as a trusteeship territory of th United Nations.

The arrengement contunue untill 1959, when the territory voted in a plebiscite to remain with the newly inependent Nigeria. It was then constituted into the old Sardauna Provence with headquater at Mubi.

The Chamba Native Authority headquaters at Ganye which also served as the headquaters of Southern Division of Sardauna Province was formed at the same time.

Seven Administrative Districts were created out of the numerious Chiefdoms in the area namely Sugu, Jada, Mbulo, Toungo, Yelwa, Leko and Koma districts. From the inception of the Native Authority, the Administrative system was a confederal whereby the seven Districts Heads rotate monthly at the Headquater in Ganye.

However generally of indigeness of the area did not cherish the system and therefore yearned for the appointment of the paramout Chief of their own. Following the disturbances which took place in Jada and Lako, the then North Eastern State Government appointed a panel to look into the matters. Having invetigated throughly into the matters, the panel recomended the appointment of paramout chief for the area with the Headquater at Ganye.

Having studied the reports of the panel, the then North Eastern State Government appointed Alhaji Adamu Sanda as the first Paramount chief of Ganye Local Government Area His appointment as the third class Chief took effect as from the 15th may, 1972. That was follwed by the offer of staff of office on 14th may, 1974. Having brought peace in the area by his honest deligent administration, the Gongola State Gaovernment condidered it partinent to promote him to the Rank of a Second class Chief. The promotin to this Rank took effect as from the 2nd November, 1982

Ganye Local Government Area is inhabited by the Chamba, Koma, Fulani, Hausa, and kutin to be mention but only a few.The people have rich cultural heritage and are predominantly farmers and cattle rearers.
