Meet M. Bama Okiro (CFR)
The first-ever Igbo Inspector General of Police (IGP) claims to hail from his mother’s place, Egbema in Ogba-Egbema Ndoni LGA of Rivers state. However, he is actually from Ohaji Egbema in Imo state but claimed Rivers state in order to secure an employment in the Nigerian Police force. He holds the title of “Agu na-echi mba” (Lion of Egbema). He was the IGP from 2007-2009, during which he was succeeded by another Igbo man from Enugu State, Ogbonna Onovo.
Born in Oguta in 1949, a lawyer, writer, and Police officer holds a degree in English language from the University of Ibadan, a master’s degree in Public Administration from The University of Lagos, and an LL.B and LL.M from the University of Jos. He also studied at the national institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Plateau State.
Note: He never denied his Igbo origin, but on his CV as inspector of police, he claims to hail from Rivers state.
