OJIE ELIMHIN

OJIE ELIMHIN

The OJIE-ELIMHIN (“king of the elimhin”), which is distinguished from the dancing elimhin in size and importance.

The Ojielimhin typically wears a long sack-like costume which trails behind, and has a larger and more elaborate ahia which appears at the head of the costume rather than at the right hand and extends the height of the apparition to supernatural proportions.

Ojielimhin appear very rarely in public, once annually in some places, but only once in seven or fourteen years in other areas. The rarity of its appearances suggests the importance of Ojie-elimhin.

As does the fact that it does not dance or entertain during its outing. Rather, it blesses the village, banishes disease and evil forces, and foretells the future for the following year or more until its next appearance.
