Road accident kills 15 in W. Kenya

At least 15 people were killed and seven others injured in a road accident in western Kenya, the police confirmed on Tuesday, Xinhua reports.

Kuresoi North Sub-County Police Commander Judah Gathenge said the incident, which occurred at 2:45 a.m. local time along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway, involved a commuter bus and a shuttle.

“We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident,” Gathenge said, adding that the two vehicles collided head-on.

He said eight adults and seven children were among those killed in the latest accident in the country.

The police have appealed to all motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads to prevent road accidents, which have claimed more than 40 lives across the East African country in 2024.

According to the police, fatal accidents are common in Kenya due to reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, and failure to use helmets.

An estimated 3,500 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite concerted efforts by the state and the private sector to promote safety on the highways, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority.
