Sisi and Putin agree to push for Gaza ceasefire

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin agreed during a phone call on Saturday to continue working to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities, ahram reports.

The US blocked a UNSC resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Friday, using its veto to once again protect Israel, which has killed more than 17,400 Palestinians in the occupied territories since 7 October.

During the phone call, El-Sisi underscored Egypt’s vigorous efforts to encourage a ceasefire, safeguard civilian lives, and deliver aid to ameliorate the dire humanitarian conditions faced by Gazans, as per a statement by the Egyptian presidency.

According to recent figures released by the Ministry of Social Solidarity, Egypt has provided over 21,000 tons of aid, including approximately 2,675 tons of medical assistance, 9,621 tons of food supplies, 7,047 tons of water, and 1,992 tons of other relief materials.

Furthermore, both leaders stressed the necessity of international efforts to attain a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue, based on a two-state solution that guarantees the establishment and recognition of the Palestinian state per relevant international legal frameworks.
