South Sudan electoral body announces election date
South Sudan’s long awaited elections will be held on December 22, the country’s National Election Commission (NEC) has announced.
South Sudanese are eager to take part in the first post-independence election. The last election, held in March 2010, saw the incumbent President Salva Kiir win with over 90 percent.
South Sudan gained independence in 2011 after a referendum in which its people voted overwhelmingly to secede from Sudan. Independence was the culmination of a long armed struggle waged by South Sudanese starting in the mid 1950s.
