The Uncommon Integrity of Governor Mr. Peter Obi in Nigerian Politics

The Uncommon Integrity of Governor Mr. Peter Obi in Nigerian Politics

In the history of Nigerian democracy from 1999 till date, the landscape has been littered with corruption scandals and shady deals. However, shining like beacons of hope are two uncorrupted politicians, both of whom are former governors. One of these rare gems was the late former President of Nigeria, Alhaji Musa Yar’Adua – may his soul rest in peace. The other person is Mr. Peter Obi, fondly referred to as “saint Peter Obi by me.

Peter Obi stands out as the only unblemished politician currently alive in Nigeria today. Unlike his counterparts, he is devoid of any property spread across the country except for his residence in Onitsha and his village Agulu. It is worth noting that his multi-million pounds worth of property in London was acquired in 1996, six years before he assumed office as the Governor of Anambra State.

A testament to his integrity is exemplified by a land that was offered to him in Abuja by the then Minister of Abuja. Peter Obi graciously declined the property, stating that he had no need for it as he was not a resident of Abuja. He also declined owning an oil well, stating that he is not involved in oil and gas. Additionally, he declined a Doctorate degree offered by one of Nigeria’s universities, citing that he didn’t follow the conventional path to earn a doctoral degree.

Peter Obi admirably issued a challenge to both the EFCC and ICPC or to anyone in Nigeria,if anyone could show him any instance where Anambra state funds were missing, he vowed to resign from politics.

His tenure as governor was marked by transparency and accountability. Despite facing impeachment for rebuilding the government house with less funding than what was approved by the House Assembly, Peter Obi maintained his stance on financial prudence.

During his handover, he invited the EFCC and ICPC to oversee the transition process. Remarkably, he handed over the sum of ₦86 billion to his successor without being indebted to any contractors, staff salaries, Civil servants , pensions or suppliers who rendered services to the government.

Peter Obi’s legacy includes making Anambra State the only state that has not borrowed money from any bank to date. Through astute financial management, he saved over 500 million dollars for Anambra when the exchange rate was 130 naira to the dollar. This prudent approach ensures that Anambra State will have access to substantial funds when the investment matures in 2025.

In a realm tainted by corruption, Peter Obi’s actions speak volumes about his character and unwavering commitment to good governance.

May God continue to preserve and guide this exceptional leader for the benefit of all.
