The wedding gown worn by Mary of Habsburg in 1515

This exquisitely preserved damask dress, is 500 years old!
It was worn by Mary of Habsburg, on her marriage to Louis II of Hungary, in 1515

The gown is now owned by the Hungarian National Museum, and is one of few dresses to survive from that century.

It was previously kept in the church treasury of Mariazell Basilica, safely kept out of the way of light, and humidity.

The dress is an example of a late Burgundian style gown, with a high, belted waist, and wide neckline.

It has a smocked ‘blouse’ underneath, made from a finely woven linen
The gown is made from green damask silk, and the neckline is trimmed in gold brocade.
