WE BOTH DIED AT THE END

CHAPTER 8 (JUST ONE)

Through out the lectures for that day, I kept thinking about what Kate said to me but I still couldn’t understand anything.

“Well, what will be will always be. I can’t come and kill myself”

I unconsciously said that to myself but upon realising it, I saw that nobody even heard me.

I came back to the hostel, feeling very tired and then I slept off.

“How many friends do you have in school?” Kate asked me

“Just one” I replied and then she smiled and repeated that phrase “just one” and then I woke up but it was all a dream.

I turned around and Suzan wasn’t back home yet. Checked the time and was shocked to see that it was pass one midnight.

“Wow, I must had fallen into a deep sleep. I swear stress no good” I said to myself while hoping that Suzan would just knock at the door so that I could open it.

The room feels boring without her in it.

“My child, my child, my child, my child”

Mr. Jackson tapped on his wife who was busy saying “my child” in her sleep but he was unsuccessful after several taps and then all by herself she jerked off with a loud scream.

“What is wrong my dear?”

“Precious, our daughter, she may be in danger”

“What are you talking about?”

“I had a very terrible dream about her”

“My wife, you must calm down. Have you forgotten that God has promised to send a helping hand to her whenever she is in danger?”

“I know my husband but you know how your daughter behaves a times. What if she decides to be stubborn or not attentive?”

“God is in control. Oya come let’s pray for her”

Mrs. Jackson quickly knelt down and then they both held hands to pray for their daughter.

I was sleeping when I heard my phone rang. I was half awake but was able to locate my phone and then I reluctantly picked the call.

“Hello!”

“Hello my daughter, how are you doing?”

“I’m fine Mommy. Why are you calling this early morning? Hope all is well?”

“All is well my dear. Just couldn’t sleep as my heart keeps telling me that you may be in danger”

“You are funny o. Mom I’m alright. I’m not in any danger”

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Yes, Mom”

“How many friends do you have in school?”

I was shocked to hear that question from my Mom.

“Just one” I replied

“Just one?”

“Yes Mom, just one”

Immediately I replied, fear gripped me and then the phone fell on the bed. Suddenly, I heard a knock on the door and behold it was all a dream again.

I got up and opened the door. It was Suzan. She was looking exhausted and that got me worried.

“Babe where you go? Where you dey come from?”

She laughed.

“You still never stop to dey ask plenty questions abi”

“What do you expect me to do when you don’t even tell me where you go to most nights and then sometimes you don’t even call to tell me that you won’t come back home. Do you know how worried I’d been”

“Oh sorry my baby (she came close to me and was playing with my cheeks as if I was her child truly) don’t worry about me, I can take care of myself and besides I am not in danger.”

She just fell on the floor and then before I could say a word, Suzan was already snoring.

I stood over her and began to think about the dream I had before Suzan knocked the door. Why was my Mom repeating the same question as Kate?

What is all about the “just one” thing. Of course I have just one friend and then I looked at Suzan. A question cane running down my mind.

“What does Suzan do most nights?”
