Zisis Karagogos (April 17, 1967 – December 19, 1986)

From the small mountain village of Askos, east of Thessaloniki in Macedonia, northern Greece, he was a Greek soldier and a border guard, stationed at the Greek border with Turkey.

While on patrol on the border, near the town of Feres, east of Alexandroupoli in Thrace, Karagogos as well as 2 other Greek soldiers, Georgios Vasilos and Dimitrios Karagiannis, were confronted by an unarmed Turk soldier, who allegedly asked the Greek soldiers if they had any cigarettes.

As Karagogos approached closer to see what was going on, it was at this point, that other armed Turks who were hiding close by, opened fire without warning at Karagogos and the other 2 Greek soldiers.

Greek forces were alerted and rushed to the area, where they were engaged in a gun battle for some 20 minutes. Karagogos had already been shot multiple times in the cowardly Turk attack and would die as a result, while Karagiannis had been wounded.

2 Turks were shot and killed by the Greek Army in response.

Never forget who we are dealing with, they are not our friends and never will be, the more Greeks understand this and come to terms with it, the better.
