SACRED HEART HOSPITAL Established in 1895 by the Catholic Mission in Abeokuta. It is indeed the first hospital in Nigeria. Conceptualized by Father Francois and J. M. Coquard it was initially located within the old mission house in Itesi, Abeokuta.
Between these two missionaries, the idea of a mission hospital was so grand and ingenious to them that Father Coquard ( a self taught doctor) became Architect contractor and labourer.
The foundation stone was laid on the 14th of October 1904 and formally opened on the 4th of May, 1914 by the then colonial governor, Sir W. Egerton (KCMG). The hospital was run by Father Coquard and and staffed by Our Lady of Apostle Sisters (nuns).
The sculpture of Father Coquard stands proud in front of the hospital till date.
